Romans 13:8-14a: 5 Day Devotional

Day 1: Real Love Has a Foundation
Devotional

Love is one of the most used words in our culture, and yet it may be one of the most misunderstood. We see it on bumper stickers, hear it in songs, and scroll past it in social media posts every day. But if we are honest, much of what the world calls love is built on feelings that shift and conditions that change. Biblical love is different. It is not rooted in emotion or popular opinion. It is rooted in the character of God Himself. And here is the encouraging part: this love has been God's design from the very beginning. Long before the New Testament, God was calling His people to love Him completely and to love their neighbors genuinely. Jesus confirmed this when He pointed back to Leviticus and Deuteronomy as the foundation of everything God requires. This means love is not a new idea or a trending concept. It is ancient, it is steady, and it comes from a God who does not change. When your feelings are unreliable and the world's version of love leaves you empty, you can return to this foundation. God's love is solid ground. This week, we are going to explore what real love actually looks like, where it comes from, and how it changes everything. Start today by simply asking yourself what you have been building your understanding of love on.

Bible Verse

"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets." - Matthew 22:37-40 (English Standard Version (ESV))

Reflection Question
When you think about love, are you building your understanding on what God says it is, or on what the culture around you says it feels like?

Sermon Quote
"Biblical love is deep and it is life changing. It is full of the character of God. It is why God created us. It is why he sent His Son so that you and I can have our sins forgiven and we can be saved and we can find ourselves with Jesus Christ both now and forever."

Prayer
Father, thank You for being the foundation of real love. Help me this week to see love the way You define it, not the way the world does. Anchor my heart in You. Amen.

Day 2: You Are Worthy of This Love
Devotional

Many of us carry a quiet belief that we are not quite lovable enough. Maybe someone told you that directly. Maybe life just made you feel it over time. Either way, that belief is a lie, and God's love is the proof. Here is what makes God's love so remarkable: He did not wait until you had it together. He did not love you once you cleaned up your act or figured out the right answers. Romans 5 tells us that while we were still sinners, still enemies of God, Christ died for us. That is not a love that requires you to earn it. That is a love that moves toward you in your worst moment. This is not the kind of love the world offers. The world's version of love often comes with unspoken conditions. Perform well enough, agree with the right things, and you will be accepted. But that kind of love is fragile. It cannot hold the weight of real life. God's love is different because it is not based on your worthiness. It is based on His character. And because of that, it is completely secure. You do not have to wonder if today is the day He changes His mind. He already knew everything about you, and He sent His Son anyway. That is a love worth building your life on.

Bible Verse
"In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent His only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins." - 1 John 4:9-10 (English Standard Version (ESV))

Reflection Question
In what area of your life do you find it hardest to believe that God's love for you is not based on your performance?

Sermon Quote
"We do not feel worthy of love. Some of you have even been told you are not worthy of love. Here's part of what's incredible about the love of God. That even while you were still a sinner and an enemy of God, Christ died for you. You, every one of you is worthy of the love of God."

Prayer
Lord, thank You for loving me before I ever deserved it. Help me to receive Your love fully today, not as something I have earned, but as a gift You freely gave. Amen.

Day 3: Love That Actually Solves Something
Devotional

There is a version of love that feels generous but never actually helps anyone. It affirms, it encourages, and it tells you that you are fine just as you are. It sounds kind. But if what you actually need is forgiveness, that kind of love leaves you empty-handed. God's love is not like that. It is not content to simply make you feel good about yourself. It looks at the real problem, which is sin and separation from God, and it does something about it. Christ did not come to affirm us in our brokenness. He came to rescue us from it. That is a love with actual power. This matters because counterfeit love, the kind that tells you God loves you and therefore nothing needs to change, actually cuts you off from the very forgiveness you need. It sounds like grace, but it is not. Real grace sees the problem clearly and pays the price to fix it. Here is the encouragement: you do not have to carry the weight of your sin alone. God's love is not just warm feelings toward you. It is a love that acted, that sacrificed, and that made a way. Whatever you are carrying today, bring it to Him. His love is strong enough to handle it, and it is the only love that can truly set you free.

Bible Verse
"For one will scarcely die for a righteous person, though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die, but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8 (English Standard Version (ESV))

Reflection Question
Is there an area of your life where you have been settling for affirmation instead of allowing God's love to bring real conviction and forgiveness?

Sermon Quote
"God's love solves a problem. It solves the problem of my sin and my rebellion that needs to be confronted and I need to be convicted and I need to be forgiven of my sin. The love of God solves a problem. And the problem is not 'I need more affirmation.' That's not the problem it solves. It solves, 'I need forgiveness.'"

Prayer
Jesus, thank You for a love that did not just comfort me but actually saved me. Where I need conviction and forgiveness today, give me the courage to receive it. Amen.

Day 4: What Love Actually Looks Like
Devotional

It is one thing to talk about love in the abstract. It is another to see it described in the specific, practical details of everyday life. First Corinthians 13 does exactly that. It does not describe a feeling, it describes a way of living: patient, kind, not envious, not proud, not self-seeking; Rejoicing in truth, not in wrongdoing; Bearing all things, enduring all things. When you read that list slowly, it is both beautiful and convicting. This is not a love that comes naturally. It is a love that requires something of us. Here is a helpful and humbling exercise: put your own name in place of the word love as you read through that passage. Where does it hold up? Where does it fall short? Most of us will find that the gap between our love and God's standard is significant. That is not meant to discourage you. It is meant to show you how much you need Him. The good news is that this kind of love is not something you manufacture on your own. It is the fruit of the Holy Spirit working in you. As you grow in your relationship with God, as you spend time in His Word and in prayer, His love begins to shape yours. You are not left to figure this out alone. He is actively growing this in you.

Bible Verse
"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (English Standard Version (ESV))

Reflection Question
When you honestly put your name in place of the word love in 1 Corinthians 13, which specific quality challenges you the most, and what might God be inviting you to surrender to Him in that area?

Sermon Quote
"It is a popular practice often to sort of put your name in the place of love in this passage of Scripture. I will tell you, if you do that seriously and honestly, that's going to be a very depressing thing to do. It's going to be a hard thing to do because what it does is it reveals how far Phil is from the love of God."

Prayer
Holy Spirit, show me where my love falls short of Your standard. Grow in me the patience, kindness, and truth-centered love that only You can produce. Amen.

Day 5: Love That Sends You Outward
Devotional

Real love does not turn you inward. It sends you outward. When the love of God takes root in your life, it does not make you more focused on yourself. It opens your eyes to the people around you, especially those who do not yet know Jesus. This is the natural overflow of a life shaped by God's love. You begin to see your neighbors, your coworkers, and your family members differently. Not as people to impress or compete with, but as people who need the same grace that changed you. The love of God expands you into the lives of others. And what does that look like practically? It looks like patience with difficult people. It looks like honesty spoken with kindness. It looks like being willing to sacrifice your comfort for someone else's good. It looks like sharing the gospel, because the most loving thing you can offer someone who does not know Christ is the news that they can. As we close this week, take a moment to think about one person in your life who needs to experience the love of God. You do not have to have all the answers. You just have to be willing. God's love in you is more than enough to reach through you to them. That is the kind of love that changes everything, and it starts with you saying yes.

Bible Verse
"Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law." - Romans 13:8 (English Standard Version (ESV))

Reflection Question
Who is one person in your life right now that God might be calling you to love more intentionally, and what is one specific step you could take this week to do that?

Sermon Quote
"The love of God actually expands us into the lives and hearts and minds of other people instead of contracting us into our own souls. This isn't all about me. This is all about Christ and what He is doing."

Prayer
Father, let Your love in me overflow to the people around me. Give me eyes to see who needs Your grace today, and give me the courage to be the one who brings it. Amen.
