Romans 15:1-6b: 5 Day Devotional
Day 1: Built to Bear One Another
Devotional
Life is not meant to be lived alone, and faith is no different. One of the most countercultural things a Christian can do is choose to stay, to lean in, and to carry someone else's weight when they are struggling to carry their own. This is not a suggestion. It is a calling. Those of us who are stronger in a given season are called to bear with those who are weaker, not because it is easy, but because it reflects the heart of Christ. Jesus was so close to the love of God and the people of God that every attack aimed at God landed on Him. He absorbed it. He stayed. That is the standard we are invited into. Not a faith that protects itself, but one that gives itself away for the sake of others. When you choose to show up for someone who is struggling, when you choose patience over frustration and presence over distance, you are doing something deeply Christlike. You may be in a strong season right now, or you may be the one who needs someone to come alongside you. Either way, you are not alone. The body of Christ is designed for exactly this kind of mutual support. And when we live it out together, something beautiful happens. We become a picture of the gospel to the world around us.
Bible Verse
"We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves." - Romans 15:1 (English Standard Version (ESV))
Reflection Question
Is there someone in your life right now who needs you to bear with them, and what is one practical way you could show up for them this week?
Sermon Quote
We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.
Prayer
Lord, give me eyes to see the people around me who are struggling and a heart willing to carry what they cannot carry alone. Teach me to love others the way You have loved me. Amen.
Day 2: The Word That Holds You Together
Devotional
When life gets hard, where do you turn first? It is an honest question, and the answer reveals a lot about what we actually trust. God did not leave us without help. He gave us His Word, and He gave it to us on purpose. Romans 15:4 tells us that Scripture was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and the encouragement it provides, we might have hope. That is not a passive promise. It is an active one. The Bible is not a museum piece or a cultural artifact. It is a living word that speaks directly into the hardest moments of your life. But here is the honest challenge. You cannot selectively receive what Scripture offers. If you want the power of the Word of God, you must accept the authority of the Word of God. That means trusting it even when it is uncomfortable, even when it challenges your assumptions, and even when the culture around you is pointing in a different direction. In a world where spiritual-sounding advice is everywhere, the call to return to the actual text of the Bible is more urgent than ever. Open it. Read it. Let it speak. The hope it produces is real, and it is exactly what you need to keep going.
Bible Verse
"For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." - Romans 15:4 (English Standard Version (ESV))
Reflection Question
When you face a difficult season, do you turn to Scripture as your first source of hope, or does it tend to be an afterthought?
Sermon Quote
If you want the power of the Word of God, you must accept the authority of the Word of God.
Prayer
Father, give me a hunger for Your Word and the humility to trust it fully, even in the places where it challenges me. Let it be my anchor when everything else feels uncertain. Amen.
Day 3: Endurance Is Not Optional
Devotional
Nobody signs up for hard things just for the sake of hard things. But endurance is not about loving the struggle. It is about loving the goal more than you hate the resistance it takes to get there. Think about something you have worked hard for in your life. A relationship, a skill, a dream. The difficulty did not make you quit because the outcome mattered more than the cost. That same principle is at the heart of the Christian life. Endurance is simply strength applied over time to trials. And it is not optional for followers of Jesus. It is expected. James 1 tells us that the testing of our faith produces steadfastness, and that steadfastness has a purpose. It is completing you, making you whole and lacking nothing. The hard season you are in right now is not wasted. It is working something in you that easier days simply cannot. You were not designed to shrink back. You were designed to press forward, even when it is costly, even when it is slow, even when you cannot yet see the outcome. The calling God has placed on your life is stronger than any opposition you will face. Hold on to that today.
Bible Verse
"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." - James 1:2-4 (English Standard Version (ESV))
Reflection Question
What trial in your life right now might God be using to build something in you that you could not develop any other way?
Sermon Quote
Endurance is simply strength applied over time to trials.
Prayer
God, help me to see my trials through Your eyes, not as obstacles but as opportunities to grow deeper in faith and closer to You. Give me the strength to endure and the trust to believe You are at work. Amen.
Day 4: Fix Your Eyes on the Joy Ahead
Devotional
Endurance has a secret. It is not gritted teeth and sheer willpower. It is a vision of something worth enduring for. Hebrews 12 gives us the clearest picture of this. Jesus, who endured the cross, did not do it by ignoring the pain. He despised the shame. He felt the weight of it. But He fixed His eyes on the joy set before Him, the joy of being with His people for eternity, and that joy was stronger than the suffering. This is the model for every believer. When you are in a season that feels unbearable, the question is not just "Can I get through this?" It is "What am I enduring for?" The calling God has placed on your life is meant to be stronger than any opposition you face. When you get a hold of that calling, nothing can veer you off course. You are not enduring for nothing. You are enduring for a kingdom that will not end, for a God who is worth it, and for a joy that is coming. Let that vision pull you forward today. Fix your eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of your faith, and keep going.
Bible Verse
"Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." - Hebrews 12:1-2 (English Standard Version (ESV))
Reflection Question
What is the "joy set before you" that God is calling you to fix your eyes on when endurance feels impossible?
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for enduring the cross for me. Help me to fix my eyes on You and on the hope ahead, so that when the road is hard, I have a reason to keep walking. Amen.
Day 5: Your Endurance Glorifies God
Devotional
Here is something worth sitting with. The way you handle hard seasons is a form of witness. When you endure through trials with faith intact, you are telling the world something true about God. You are saying, with your life, that He is worth it. That the gospel is real. That there is something on the other side of suffering that makes it worth pressing through. A church that endures together, that refuses to shrink back, that keeps loving and serving and trusting even when it is costly, that church glorifies God. But the reverse is also true. When we give up, when we walk away, when we let the weight of a trial convince us that something else is worth more than God, we communicate something we may not intend. We end up saying, in effect, that He is not enough. You were made for more than that. The God of endurance and encouragement is with you. He is not asking you to be perfect. He is asking you to keep going, to stay in harmony with your brothers and sisters, and to trust that your faithfulness, even in small and imperfect ways, brings glory to the Creator of all things. That is a calling worth living for.
Bible Verse
"May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." - Romans 15:5-6 (English Standard Version (ESV))
Reflection Question
If someone watched how you responded to your hardest season of faith, what would your endurance communicate to them about who God is?
Sermon Quote
When we endure through trials, we bear witness to the truth of the gospel and bring glory to God.
Prayer
Lord, let my life be a testimony to Your faithfulness. When I am tempted to give up, remind me that my endurance is not just for me. It is for Your glory and for the people watching. Amen.
